Position Overview
Silver Leaf Sawmill is seeking an experienced Procurement Forester to procure timber across Northern Michigan. This role is primarily responsible for purchasing hardwood standing timber, produced logs (delivered and on landing), and marked timber bid sales.
The ideal candidate has a strong knowledge of Northern Michigan hardwood species and markets, enjoys building long-term relationships, and is comfortable working independently in the field.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Procure hardwood standing timber, logs, and marked/bid timber sales within 180 miles of Elmira, MI
Develop and maintain strong relationships with private landowners, logging contractors, forestry consultants, and public land management organizations
Negotiate stumpage prices, delivered log pricing, and timber sale contracts based on current market conditions
Evaluate timber tracts through cruising, appraisals, and harvest feasibility analysis
Administer and oversee timber sale contracts to ensure compliance with specifications, BMPs, and environmental regulations
Monitor harvesting operations to ensure quality, utilization, safety, and adherence to sale terms
Coordinate log flow, volumes, and species mix to meet mill and customer requirements
Track purchases, deliveries, and costs using mill software
Stay informed on regional markets, pricing trends, and supply conditions
Represent the company professionally within the Northern Michigan forestry community
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Forestry, Forest Management, Natural Resources, or a related field (preferred)
2+ years of experience in timber procurement, forest operations, or hardwood marketing (preferred)
Strong knowledge of Northern Michigan tree species (maple, oak, cherry, basswood, beech, birch, etc.) and log grades
Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills
Ability to work independently across a large geographic territory
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and forestry-related software or GIS tools
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively in rural and remote areas
Preferred Experience
Experience cruising and purchasing standing timber in mixed northern hardwood stands and/or produced logs
Familiarity with marked timber sales and competitive bid processes
Experience working with state, county, or institutional timber bid sales
Knowledge of Michigan forestry regulations and BMPs
